Yes, I've experienced that kind of situation also, be careful of choosing a friend or accepting a friend in FB, we might don't know it's virus that can kill your OS.

I do wish more people would write an actual intro message when requesting to connect on LinkedIn. My requests always include how I came across their profile and what we have in common. I despise the default request. Thanks for the tips.

completely agree – just had a dilemma about whether to accept as a friend on FB someone that's a work contact with whom I may wish to do business in future. I'd've preferred to redirect him to LinkedIn but I'm not sure of the etiquette on that…
I guess it's fine to accept friends from everywhere if your FB profile is just part of a personal brand rather than a place to keep in touch with friends. But the case you had shows the problem!
